EMERALD COAST FUN FACT

Sand Dollars

Indigenous to Santa Rosa Beach waters, these fragile sea creatures have become a emerald coast icon. They have no arms or legs but move around by tiny spines on their body. Sand dollars are usually found lying in a bed buried under a layer of sand and are most commonly found by digging in the sand with your toes!

If a sand dollar is found alive, it will appear to have a layer of very fine hair, which are actually spines, on its body. They are a slow moving grazer that feeds on disintegrating organic material found within their sand beds.
